How to Disable USB Ports in Windows 7 | 8 Without Using a Software

Many people would ask about how to disable USB ports in window 7 and 8, then the answer is definitely here. The truth is that most of those individuals who are faced with this kind of situations are groups of people who don’t want certain information or some sort of secrets be leaked from their PC by being copied by unauthorized individuals or employees. As a result of this, they prevent this by disabling their USB ports from such individuals or employees.

Enough of this introduction, let go straight into the business of the day. Basically there four ways by which you can disable USB ports in windows 7 and 8. They are listed below:

  1. Use of USB Blockers.
  2. By Un-installing the USB Mass Storage Drivers
  3. Disabling USB Ports from Device Manager.
  4. Altering registry values for USB Mass Storage Devices.

Today we are more interested in revealing to you the last method which is disabling USB ports in PC by altering registry values for USB mass storage devices. Before i go into more detail, let me give a little description on how the first three methods can be achieved.

Method 1: Use of USB Blockers

Not every people who are interested in achieving this task are rich to obtain one or two softwares for this purpose. This method involves using one software or the other which automatically block the USB drives and hence no one can copy contents or documents from the PC on which the software is installed. Need a software recommendation? Am sorry i won’t be able to recommend any of them because i don’t use them.

Method 2: By Un-installing the USB Mass Storage Drivers

Drivers are very important in the life of any computer because without them some of the major functionalities of the computer might not work properly. Although they are of different types, while all of them can be found at the device manager of any PC, the driver which is more important to us here is the USB mass storage drivers.

This can be got by navigating to : My Computer >>> System Properties >>> Device Manager

Method 3: Disabling USB Ports from Device Manager

This is another method by which you can disable USB ports in window 7 or 8 without using a software. This method is similar to the one explained in method 2 above just that the only difference between the two is that instead of uninstalling the the USB drivers in method 2, you just have to disable them.

Method 4: Altering registry values for USB Mass Storage Devices.

This is my favourite method of blocking USB ports of computers having important documents in my office where i undertake project assistance to students in higher institution .

We are going to be achieving this by altering the settings through regedit command on run console.

Follow the following Steps to get started:

  1. Go to Start > Run , type “ regedit” and press enter to open the registry editor
  2. Navigate to the following key
  3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\USBSTOR
  4. Look at the right pane, select Start and change the value to 3 . (The value 4 will disable USB Storage).
  5. Click OK. This will re-enable USB Ports and allow you to use USB or Pen drives.
