Using Your mobile Phone as a modem for your computer: How to connect to pc with software

It is a great thing when we realize the capability of our mobile phone, there are many things we can do with our mobile phones, apart from making phone calls, receiving and sending text message, but I must also clarify it that, the functions of our mobile phone depends on the configuration it has, you cannot expect a mobile phone that worth #40,000 to perform the same function with that of #5,000, way too different.
. Here in this article I will be giving detailed explanation on how to use your mobile phone as a modem for your computer, so that you won’t have to go through the stress of buying and paying for modem, when you have a phone that can perform the function of a modem, The phones that can perform this functions are phones that have the GPRS service, the model or brand of the phone doesn’t matters in as much as it has the GPRS service installed on it. Below I will be listing out the materials and software that you will be using to set up your phone as a modem for your computer
REQUIREMENT:

  1. USB cable (Connectivity Adapter cable) e.g. CA-101
  2. Phone with GPRS service
  3. Your phone software e.g. Nokia PC suite
  4. Bluetooth hardware (External or Internal)
  5. A computer running on at least window Xp professional, Vista, ME, SE, 2000
  6. Connectivity cable driver (software)
  7. Minimum of 64MB RAM on your computer
  8. Minimum of 80MB free space on your Hard drive disk
  9. USB port
  10. CD-ROM drive
  11. At least Pentium 300Mhz higher CPU

Little as it maybe, that is all what you need to connect your computer to the internet with the aid of your phone as the modem, you don’t need to be a pro before you can do this, and if there is any point where you seem not to be getting the procedure, you can always read over and over again, you must take note that for you to access the internet, you would be charged some certain amount of money by your service provider, but the charges is very low compared to buying and subscribing to a modem. Connecting your phone is very easy so I will be explaining the procedure in a very detailed step, There are three different method to connect your phone, it is either you use the Bluetooth method, the infrared method or the Cable method, according to my observation, connection made with cables are more faster than other method, the infrared connection is liable to disconnection from time to time, the advantages the Bluetooth connection has over other connections is that, it is not compulsory to put your phone beside the computer, and you can use your phones for other things like making phone calls and sending text message, while your phone is been used as the modem at the same time,. Bluetooth connection runs with a speed of normal rate.

CABLE CONNECTION: Install the connectivity cable driver software (item 6) on your computer; this should not take more than five minutes or less, installation of this software is important if you would be using Cable method, after the installation, install your phone connectivity software (item 3) e.g. Nokia Pc suite (For Nokia only) there are other soft wares for different phones model, normally your phone should come with this software but if it doesn’t, you can always download the software online, by visiting your phone makers website, they are available for free, make sure you install this software, as it will help your computer to recognize your phone as a standard modem, NOTE THAT: if you connect the phone without installing your phone software, the system will recognize your phone as a storage device. After installing those two soft wares, you can now connect your phone to your computer, and wait for some seconds, so that your computer will install your phone as a standard modem. This does not means you’ve gotten access to the internet, later in this article I shall be explaining the procedure in configuring your computer, so that you would have access to the internet.

BLUETOOTH CONNECTION: For you to use this kind of connection you must have already installed the Bluetooth hardware on your computer, in newly produced computers the Bluetooth devices has already been installed on it, but if you don’t have the Bluetooth installed on your computer you can always get an external Bluetooth device they are not expensive and they can be easily connected to the computer because the are play plug-in device, That means that you don’t need any software before the hardware is installed, all you need to do is insert the Bluetooth device at the USB port of your computer, then you are ready to go!, turn on your phone Bluetooth, then you should pair your mobile phone with the computer, so that you would be able to connect you phone.

INFRARED CONNECTION: To me this is the least means of connection you will want to use, But hey! You can still use it if you cant use the above options, for you to use the infrared connection you must have an infrared hardware installed on your computer, I have not seen an external infrared device, but it might be out there, the most important thing to take note is that you must place your phone very close to where the infrared port is, and your phone must have infrared port too. I think you should know about the disadvantage of this connection, the data transfer is slow and they are liable to disconnection.

CONNECTING TO THE INTERNET.
This is the last phase of this article, to connect your phone to the internet is very easy, in as much as you are able to connect your phone to your computer in the first instance, but I must make this clear to you, that you must request for the internet setting from your mobile phone service provider, this is how it works, when you dial the connection code on your computer, the computer connects with your phone, then the phone connects with your service provider, the process is very fast, and to me it help saves some cash too. To configure your computer, you can always count on the connection wizard located on the Control Panel ——à Network Connection—–à then click on the create new connection on the side bar ——à connect to the internet option—–à choose from a list of internet service provider, just follow the wizard instruction, then you will be ready to explore the world right in your room within seconds.
